Author Topic: Arguments Supporting Idea That Saturn Didn't Hit a Tree - But Instead Was in a Head-on Collision  (Read 45 times)

In this post, I will state the reasons why I believe that the Saturn probably did not hit a tree (on either side of the road at the accident site), causing its damage. If the road was not clear and dry - it introduces some unpredictability into the below.

On page 4, the police report describes what the officer believed had happened to the car. Most important was that he saw that the car was West Bound in the East Bound lane.

Note that the damage is to the left hand of the car at the front.

If you follow the road around the corner, you can see that there are no trees on the left hand side of the road. We can reasonably eliminate the possibility that the car hit any tree on the left, as the accident did not occur as far down on the left side of the road where they first appear.

Returning to the original position, looking from this view, one can see the very sharp left hand turn that the Saturn would have had to make, just to make it past Old Peters Road.

After making a hard left hand turn, if the car were to then hit a tree on the right side of the road, such that the left front corner of the car (driver's side) were to end up damaged as it is in the picture above, the driver would have to make such a hard right turn that it almost seems that a struggle for the wheel were taking place ala United Airlines Flight 93 of September 11, 2001. It simply makes no sense to assume that the car hit a tree from that perspective alone.

But further, if you follow Google Street View to the area of the blue ribbon and look at the side of the road, you will see that the road is actually elevated. It makes no sense that a car with engine problems, slowing down through a curve, would have enough momentum to traverse the elevation, bounce back and then swerve 180 degrees. Dick Guy reasoned that the Saturn must have traversed the corner of the Westman's lawn, as shown here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BHe11__0emoVgWzEZXCRCrpBD_po34O5/view?usp=sharing

He provided this drawing to James Renner to attempt to explain the car damage. James Renner believes that the car was damaged by impacting the snowbank in front of the Westman's home. **However, this hypothesis provides no explanation as to how the Saturn got around the corner - as as far down the road as it did, or how it ended up facing the opposite direction, unless one were to assume that Maura, after doing a 180, decided to drive backwards to [the spot of the blue ribbon] or [beyond as the Westman's say the accident site was.]

In spite of what James Renner says Dick Guy thinks, **Dick Guy's drawing clearly shows that he thought the Saturn traversed the Westman's lawn first, then traversed the street, thus allowing the Saturn to impact an object on the right. The implication of this assumption being that the Saturn drove over the Westman's lawn and then continued to traverse the street, hit an object and then continued with enough force and momentum to further do a 180 degree turn as a result of impact. Meanwhile, the police report does not mention the front of the Westman's lawn as having tire impressions, but because Dick Guy was there that night, it should be considered reasonable that he saw tire marks going over the Westman's lawn.

Dick Guy said the following about this in his interview on Oxygen episodes 3 & 4:

"Q: Was anything about the scene unusual to you?

A: Yes. I walked up and down the snow banks a little ways. The part that was inexplicable to me was why would anybody shave off the inside of a corner. If you lose control of a car you generally would proceed in a direction that inertia would take you as opposed to a tight maneuver like that. If you were slippery you generally go off the outside of a curve you don’t go through the inside of it. Didn't make sense."

Although the tire marks might have been on the Westman's lawn, the idea that the Saturn drove over the Westman's lawn ignores the condition of the car as stated by Fred Murray, the registered owner of the car. In this video, Fred Murray states that the Saturn tended to stall out when turns were made, so she would have had to go faster then normal to prevent the stall. Simply put, a car that requires extra gas to not stall on a turn isn't going to accomplish the following: Drive over a rough, snow covered area like the Westman's lawn, traverse the street and then hit an object at the side of the road and preserve enough momentum, to spin out an additional 90 degrees.

Furthermore, it does not make sense that the driver would choose to drive on the left hand side of the road without reason, or additionally choose to drive the left two tires over the Westman's lawn, especially when the car was prone to stall if it didn't get enough gas.

Instead, I believe that the condition of the Saturn would have caused the driver to take the corner too fast so that it would not stall. In doing so, the driver would treat the entirety of the road as if it were a single lane, and in doing so, the driver would bring the Saturn into the left lane, causing a collision, if there was oncoming traffic.

It is for all these reasons that I don't believe the car hit a tree on the right hand side of the road, nor do I believe the car traversed the Westman's lawn. Instead, I believe 1 of 2 things are possible:

1.) Either the Saturn had somewhat of a head on collision in which its front left corner hit an oncoming vehicle (that tried to avoid the collision) hitting the car at a skew, and causing the Saturn to spin out 180 degrees (or spun out on some ice as described in a previous post)
2.) the car was traveling West when it hit the snowbank, discussed here: https://mauramurray.createaforum.com/archive-of-prior-analysis-and-discussion/maura-was-driving-west-(opinion)-38/

I only feel it is possible that the car hit a tree, if:

1.) The snow collected on the side of the road and was coincidentally just high enough to provide the Saturn a flat drive to the trees (as you can see they are quite far back)

2.) Maura had suddenly and irrationally decided to make a right hand turn into the trees for no reason at all.


3.) That the snowbank had dramatically changed between the time of the accident and 3 days later, when it is shown in this video:

Because I don't find the above conditions above plausible, I must consider that the car was in a collision or that it could have been heading West when it had the accident.

Addendum: I don't find the idea that the accident took place earlier and further down the road plausible, because the airbags, both of which were deployed, would have made further driving of the Saturn (to the accident site) practically impossible. Art and Maggie state that, based upon the back box information that came from the Saturn, Maura attempted to restart her car 7 times, and only after a single impact.
